It is important to understand it necessary to dig or blast the ball out of the sand rather than splash it out because the ball is nestled deeper in the sand. Attempting to scoop the ball out is a sure fire way to fail. The golfer should use the sand to push the ball out of the bunker and therefore the club head needs to dig into the sand. So, th e leading edge or digger of the clubface strikes the sand first. In order to encourage the digging action, your setup is crucial.
Close the clubface before you place your hands on the club. By closing the clubface, the leading edge of the club closer to the sand making it easier to dig the ball out.
Hold the club tighter with both hands and grip down on the handle. This will stiffen the shaft and help prevent the club from turning in your hands when entering the sand.
Place the ball farther back in your stance (behind the center to inside your back foot would be adequate) and lean the club shaft left. This encourages the leading edge of the club to dig into the sand. It also creates a steeper angle of attack in the sand necessary for blasting the ball.
Place 60-70% of your weight on the front foot. This also encourages a steeper angle of attack.
